Justice and the Health Care System

Description
Professor Benjamin directs our attention to the tension between two goals at the heart of health care in our country: controlling costs and providing equitable access. To illustrate the problems this tension produces, he’ll show and discuss two videos: the PBS documentary “Who Lives? Who Dies?” and “The Waiting Room,” an award-winning film set in Oakland’s Highland Hospital waiting room. He’ll also employ ideas from John Rawls’s Theory of Justice to get some philosophical perspective on what seems to be the inevitability of health care rationing in the nation. Here’s a chance to take a penetrating look at who has access to care, who falls through the cracks, and just what determines one’s medical destiny in these regards.
