The Virtue of Uncertainty

Description
Dr.  Garrett offers us a history of skepticism and its undermining of older understandings of “truth.” It now plays a vital role in philosophy, religion, and science. Regarding science, it may sound strange to say, but ignorance is not its enemy; it is its precondition. The true enemy of science, Dr. Garrett argues, is certainty, an uncritical acceptance of beliefs based on authority, not evidence. And uncritical certainty has, unfortunately, become prevalent in American culture. Dr. Garrett will look closely at the rise of “certainty” and suggest that it might threaten representative democracy and even our own personal integrity. Now there’s a provocative thought. Come test it out with OLLI and Dr. Garrett.
