Course Description

The Enlightenment, that sweeping Eighteenth century celebration of reason and challenge to traditional authority, deeply influenced the founders of our republic. Professor Garrett will show how European thinkers—Hobbes, Locke, Hume, and Kant—helped shape the idea of America as an exceptional place, amidst turbulent debate. Then it’s on to our own times, an age of climate change, stunning new technologies, and confounding global challenges. Do the old Enlightenment debates still have relevance? Professor Garrett offers us a chance to address that question and to exchange ideas about where our republic is presently and where it’s heading. Kant challenged his age: “Dare to know! Have courage to use your own reason.” With Professor Garrett’s help, let’s see if we’re up to it.
