Course Description

Mr. Bailey offers us the third and final chapter in his survey of America’s musical theater, beginning with an in-depth look at musicals from the 1970s and 80s, with special emphasis on superstar composers Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (Evita, Cats) and epic productions like Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables. Then it’s on into the 90s and the rise of popular Disney musicals (The Lion King) and the groundbreaking Rent. He’ll end with a look at recent decades, a period that’s seen the waning popularity of musicals, the trend of turning movies into musicals (Hairspray, Billy Elliott), and efforts to revive the genre with shows like The Book of Mormon and Hamilton. It’s a fine finish to a spirited series. Don’t miss it!
