Martin Marshall’s series on comedic genius returns to OLLI with a look at the work of Moms Mabley, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin. The course will feature analysis and clips from a different legendary comedian each week. Moms Mabley opened for Cab Calloway at the Apollo Theater in Harlem from the 1930s onward and enjoyed a movie career in the 1970s. Lenny Bruce changed the course of standup comedy starting in the 1950s right up to his untimely death in 1966. Richard Pryor blazed his own trail, including co-writing “Blazing Saddles”, setting his career and himself on fire in the process. George Carlin evolved from a fairly straight comic in the 1950s to an acerbic observer of life and politics in the 1990s and beyond. It’s time for laughs, a few tears, and lots of insights with OLLI.
