The course will start with a brief survey of Jewish history to the era of the scrolls. Mr. Meir-Levi will then summarize the controversies surrounding the Dead Sea Scrolls, their discovery, the dramatic scandals related to their non-publication, and their eventual publication. He will examine the most important scrolls, their content, and what they tell us about the Essenes, the Jewish community that held them as sacred scripture, and about the millennial and end-of-days beliefs of these and other sectarian and schismatic Jewish groups in Judea at that time. Short selections of the most important and most controversial of the scrolls will be read.
