In the 16th and 17th century religious differences and efforts to “reform” Christianity unleashed wars, pillaging, plague, destruction of property, and the deaths of millions. In the wake of such tragic turmoil, thinkers and writers began critical reassessment of what had occurred. Join us for a discussion of the great thinkers and writers of this vibrant period of “enlightenment”, one, sad to say, that would lead to its own revolutions and wars. The “cast of characters” includes John Locke, David Hume, Adam Smith, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Denis Diderot, Immanuel Kant, Johann Goethe, Gottfried Leibniz, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, and Thomas Jefferson. Here’s a crew well worth revisiting. Their hits and misses can instruct us all. (ONLINE)
