Course Description

The tumult of 2020, notably protests around the removal of Confederate statues and police conduct, point to the way in which the events of the US Civil War and its aftermath continue to shape much of the present-day American experience. In this course, we will look at the intertwined phenomena of slavery and race as they developed through the 19th century, came to a head in the Civil War and how Reconstruction shaped American politics and culture. Or, to put it another way, we will ask ourselves: who actually won the Civil War? This question continues to reverberate in our national life. Let’s see if OLLI and Professor Senkewicz have answers.
