Professor Fox looks closely at the life and works of Hans Christian Anderson. This gifted storyteller hides his own depths and complexities from us, certainly in his autobiographies, where he chooses what to reveal, but also in his beguiling stories. Whether it’s tales of unrequited love like The Little Mermaid, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Top of the Ball, or the story of the Ugly Duckling, who ends up a swan despite a barnyard birth, Anderson is always hinting at his own phobias, depressions, and religious confusions. Let OLLI and Professor Fox help release this creative writer from the nursery, reveal him as the complex adult he truly is, and celebrate his sophisticated genius.
