Course Description

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s works have been called “a play of light and shadow,” and the same might be said of his life. Deeply scarred by his ancestor’s involvement in the Salem Witch trials, Hawthorne was obsessed with the concept of sin. He was both a joy and an enigma to those who knew him. We’ll look into this “haunted” man’s life, philosophies, family, friends, and works.
