Operas have been thrilling people for 500 years, mixing enticing stories, orchestral and vocal music, dance, and theatre in irresistible ways. This fusion of the arts grew out of the philosophical and artistic tumult of the Renaissance and has been with us to the present day. Professor Mauch will survey this long history, using visual and audio examples, from the origins of the genre through its key stages: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, and on into the 21st century. The recent innovations in set design and stage direction technologies make a proper capstone for the tour. When the journey is done, you will have a deeper understanding of why the opera, such a magnetic mix of sights and sounds, still holds such fascination for our hearts and minds.
