The Forgotten Crisis of Our Democracy. Adam Hochschild, whose recent book, American Midnight, was called “a harrowing portrait of America in 1917–21, rife with racist violence, xenophobia and political repression abetted by the federal government” by the New York Times Book Review, gives an illustrated lecture about the years that were his focus. Strangely ignored by standard history textbooks, this period saw the worst assault on civil liberties in American since the immediate aftermath of slavery, and has some unexpected parallels to today.
