Course Description
It’s time to “travel” to Italy with some perfect summer reading. From the sun-soaked beaches of Sicily to the romantic canals of Venice, explore two classic mysteries and the landscapes that inspired them: Donna Leon’s Death at La Fenice and Andrea Camilleri’s The Shape of Water. You’ll read the books prior to class meetings, then we’ll immerse ourselves in the pleasures of these diverting narratives and reflect on how fiction can take us deep into other cultures. An added treat is comparing how two internationally bestselling authors, one Italian and one American, go about probing aspects of Italian life, history, culture, and, of course, crime. (ONLINE)
