Professor Bryant guides us through two of Jane Austen’s novels, Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. Both are telling depictions of the manners, mores, and pursuit of economic security during the British Regency. The Dashwood and Bennet sisters search for romance, love, and safe havens in society. They also experience heartbreak, frustration, and learn the perils of hasty judgements. But, as in all great novels, it is these characters’ search for identity that draws us back, again and again. OLLI and Professor Bryant will explore with you the irony and playfulness of an Austen world where “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
