Professor Bryant guides us through two more of Jane Austen’s novels, Emma and Persuasion. Both offer telling depictions of the manners, mores, and the pursuit of economic security during the British Regency. The heroines in each, Ms. Woodhouse and Miss Eliot, are near opposites in character, one spoiled and headstrong, the other intelligent, accomplished, and attractive but unmarried at 27. Austen draws us into the lives of these two, and enthralls us with how each searches for identity and safe haven in a world filled with social and economic challenges. Allow OLLI and Professor Bryant to explore with you the Austen world where, “(the) idea of good company…is the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation.”
