The platonic but deeply felt relationship between these two creative poets was dramatized recently in Sarah Ruhl’s play, “Dear Elizabeth.” Her confessional “Cal” and reticent “Elizabeth” sometimes seem a literary odd couple. They led such different lives and developed unique aesthetic tastes.
Mr. Alpaugh, a poet himself, will show us how these two great poets, despite their differences, shared a common passion for life and a belief that only poetry could capture it at its height. As Bishop herself put it: “Since we do float on an unknown sea, I think we should examine the other floating things that come our way carefully; who knows what may depend on it?” An astute observation. Let Mr. Alpaugh and OLLI float some interesting things your way.
