Course Description
Unauthorized migration to a foreign land entails a journey fraught with anxiety, danger, suffering, and loss – and no promise of deliverance. Migration journey films can be compelling but grim; the stories honest about the dire perils of migration yet told with grace and humanism. We’ll study a classic American film about regional migration, The Grapes of Wrath, and then five recent films about migration from Central to North America or from Africa or Asia to Europe, and one about escape from Europe during the Nazi era. Participants will gain from directed close reading of the individual films an understanding of how filmmakers can tell these very difficult stories with drama and empathy. The assigned films are available for streaming online for modest charges. (ONLINE – no class May 30)
