Course Description

“I contain multitudes”, exclaimed the great poet Walt Whitman, and indeed he did.  But so do we, and Ms. Dresser will explore with us how our own multiple personalities can be expressed in writing.  She’ll start with joint readings of “persona” poems, a popular genre for “outsider” poets such as women and people of color.  These works will help show how characterization can be accomplished not just in poetry but in fiction and drama as well.  You’ll then have the opportunity to choose your own genre and do your own “persona” writing.  The class will include time for critiquing participants’ work in a supportive and encouraging environment.
