Nella Larsen’s early 20th century cross-cultural novellas, Passing and Quicksand are rich explorations of crucial aspects of African-American life. Once again we find in them a chance to see how literature and the law can come together with Ms. Phillips as our guide. Larsen’s Harlem Renaissance writings, with their insights into passing, gender tensions, and the identity problems outsiders can face provide the literary meat. Ms. Phillips’s legal training gives us guidance as we explore the potential legal fallouts from each of these three key areas. As OLLI and Ms. Phillips have alerted you before: Dust off the gavel and get ready to weigh in on the mixing of literary art and the law!
