Many of us remember Monty Python’s Flying Circus satirizing the Spanish Inquisition: “No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!” (It was always there.) But the satire was based on an all-too-real historical entity and a process that’s been doing serious business in the world, one way or another, for nearly 800 years. Its first targets were those outside the Christian faith like Jews and Moors, but quickly included witches, the Knights Templar, scientists like Galileo, and theologians or philosophers who strayed from church standards. Sadly, this theological tool to ferret out heresy has spread beyond religion and become a standard in the repertoire of secular enforcers of orthodoxy. And these kinds of enforcers have refined the devices of torture and punishment first deployed. They are still with us today, evolving with modern technologies. It’s a sobering subject, but an important one. Join OLLI and Mr. Dincher to explore it.
