Course Description
Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, contains a variety of Jewish stereotypes but also offers humanistic insights to counter them. Given the alarming rise in overt antisemitic attitudes in the 21st century, it becomes important to understand the sources of age-old Jewish stereotypes, to recognize them in ourselves and our society today, and to dispel them with knowledge of historical contexts, misperceptions and fallacious logic. This course explores the impact of Shakespeare’s dramatization of 16th century stereotypes of Jewish people and how to overcome them in our own time, some 500 years later.
