Professor Markos invites us to explore the works of several major poets and discover the differences between their first and second drafts. He’ll distribute copies of initial drafts and their revisions from the pens of William Blake, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, William Butler Yeats, Robert Frost, Dylan Thomas, William Shakespeare, and some others as well. Class discussion will center on what stylistic or substantive changes made it possible to better the first draft. Professor Markos thinks this focus will deepen our appreciation of poetry in general. OLLI agrees, and also endorses Professor Marko’s challenge to fearless poets in the class: you may submit copies of first and revised versions of your own poems for inspection!
