Mr. Jordan takes us on a guided tour of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s epic adventure to the Antarctic in 1914.
Shackleton and his crew of 27 boarded the Endurance (apt name) and headed off to make a land crossing of Antarctica. It was not to be. They found themselves trapped in the permanent pack ice of the Weddell Sea, where their ship was slowly crushed.
They survived on ice floes, then were stranded on an island. From there, Shackelton and five others made one of the most incredible open-boat journeys of all time, crossing the uncharted interior of South Georgia Island, ultimately reaching a whaling outpost.
Once there they were able to return and rescue other crew members. It’s time for an expedition with OLLI and Mr. Jordan. Winter gear optional.
