Course Description
Two great tragedies from Shakespeare’s mature period, Julius Caesar and Hamlet, transformed the action-oriented spectacles of earlier Elizabethan drama. In them, Shakespeare crafted a more intimate, psychological approach built around conflicted protagonists whose intelligence and sense of justice complicate their choices of action, setting new standards for brilliant language and dramatic stagecraft. When high moral purpose confronts tyranny and bloodshed, there is born something essential and visceral to put human character to the ultimate test.
[Close readings of both plays will be supplemented by video of different productions.]
