Course Description

Professor Bell, author of Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home, will take us deep into the research that produced the book and into the remarkable story inspiring it.  The book was shortlisted for the 2020 George Washington Prize and the 2020 Harriet Tubman Prize with good reason.  The Wall Street Journal hailed it as “superbly researched and engaging”. Jane Kamensky, Professor of American History at Harvard University said it belongs “alongside the work of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edward P. Jones, and Toni Morrison.”  Sometimes the best way to understand the inequities of the American system of slavery and the courage of those who resisted it is a close look at real people doing both.  OLLI and Professor Bell offer such a look.  Come and partake.
