Course Description
Californians are generally unaware that in the 19th century their state sought to exterminate its indigenous population, an atrocity known under contemporary international law as genocide.
This course explores what happened in California as this horrendous process unfolded between 1846 and 1900, and connects California’s story with the broader narrative of the United States conquest in the west. It also shows how the genocide continues to affect California society, culture, and politics.
Allow Robert McNally to guide us as we are called to examine and struggle with our history. It’s a reckoning we need to take.
