Course Description

Mrs. Jennifer Sachs, Chief of Educational Services in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District offers a look into how local school districts are responding to recent challenges to particular books in our schools.  These concerns are often brought to light by parents after thumbing through a book found in their child’s backpack or after an unexpected topic from a novel is brought up at the dinner table.  Presently, the large majority of book bans underway today are not due to individual parent concerns but often reflect the work of a growing number of advocacy organizations that have made demanding censorship of certain books and ideas in schools part of their mission.  This lecture will provide insight into the role of teachers, parents, school staff and School Boards when books are challenged in classrooms and schools.
