Course Description

The Quiet Man is one of America’s best-loved films. Directed by John Ford and starring Maureen O’Hara, John Wayne, and many Abbey Theatre actors, the movie remains the subject of wide-ranging research on its direction, roots and themes. Is it Irish or Irish-American? Stereotypical? Sexist? Sentimental? Is there an anti-McCarthy element? How did Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese borrow from it? We will consider these and other questions and the film’s impact on tourism in Ireland. (ONLINE)
