Think the short story is only found in first-year English courses or the pages of the New Yorker? Not so. Ms. Matthews invites you to indulge your love of reading without the sometimes overwhelming book club obligation of a full volume each session. She’ll lead discussions focusing on one story per meeting, beginning with Washington Irving’s, “Rip Van Winkle,” from The Oxford Book of American Short Stories, 2nd ed., edited by Joyce Carol Oates. You’ll explore classic literary elements like setting, character, conflict, and symbolism to hone your appreciation of how authors create memorable short fictions. Ms. Matthews will also provide brief biographical sketches of the authors and describe the contexts in which they wrote. It’s time to take a “short cut” and deepen your love of reading with Ms. Matthews and OLLI.
