Course Description

The combat on the ground, student protests at home, families torn apart, the traumas of returning Vets, and the travails of refugees—all are parts of the story of America’s war in Vietnam. The conflict there launched a divisive period that rocked and shaped a generation. This seminar will look at the experiences of this turbulent period through the prism of short fiction by American and Vietnamese writers, the works of both men and women. How did these writers attempt to document and make sense of the historic and emotional truths of a controversial era? Students will read a selection of stories each week, provided by the instructor in advance of class sessions, then engage in discussions about the messages in each story and the interconnections between them. There’s much to be learned here about our misadventures abroad. (ONLINE)
