Course Description

Want to solve the world’s problems? Why not turn philosophical? Join Mr. House for a serious but not heavy-handed move in that direction. What better way to begin than with a look at the three basic fields of philosophy—metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics—to see how they have been put to use in making sense of our world. He’ll start with the Greeks and how they changed Western thought forever. Then on to Descartes, Berkeley, Hume, Locke and Kant for exploration of such thorny issues as free will vs determinism, the “mind-body problem”, and the question of change and self-identity. We’ll see how all this is still pertinent today, and end with some reflections on morality. Are you ready to tackle some of the big life questions? Allow OLLI and Mr. House to help you prep for the task.
