Challenges to academic freedom on university campuses have intensified in the wake of the 2016 election. Using his recent book, The Future of Academic Freedom, as a touchstone, Professor Reichman will summarize the themes and arguments swirling around these controversies and set them firmly in the history of earlier struggles over teaching and research in higher education. He’ll pay special attention to how the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) have defined and defended the idea of academic freedom. Allow OLLI and Professor Reichman to give you a clear look at how ideologues, politicians, corporate trustees, and wealthy donors often seek to shape what’s researched and taught on campuses, and the importance of resisting such intrusions.
