Course Description

How did childbirth go from natural to medicalized in the United States? This lecture will help answer that provocative question, exploring the origins of the medicalization of birth beginning in the late 19th century and the growing complexity of its procedures as various birthing movements unfolded in the 20th. Dr. Rendina’s presentation will bring us right up to discussion of present day maternal health disparities in our society and current conversations about good birthing, including alternative ways to bring babies into the world. Subtopics will include drugs in/for childbirth and birth technologies. Allow OLLI and Dr. Rendina to breathe new life into a story as old as time. (ONLINE)
