One of the most familiar pieces of Christmas literature is Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Not so familiar, however, is the fascinating background to this famous tale: why did Dickens write it; what was happening in his life at the time; and what did Christmas mean to him? Then there is the influence of the story, how it shaped the celebration of Christmas in the Victorian Age and beyond. Most of us know little about his many other, equally charming works featuring Christmas. So now’s the time to revel in all the riches Dickens provides us when he turns to Christmas, starting with that famous “carol” but going well beyond it. Join OLLI and Sue Fox for a deeper appreciation of the literary, social, and cultural value of Charles Dickens’ yule preoccupations
