Ms. Dresser puts a provocative question to us: why do ominous creatures from our early English literary tradition continue to fascinate us? Or to put it another way, why won’t Beowulf leave us alone? And if you think dragons don’t still have a grip on our imaginations, how can you explain the popularity of T.V. sensations like Game of Thrones and Vikings or the recent King Arthur movie? In our own time, monsters from the past seem to compete well with aliens from outer space, and Arthur, that “once and future King” is still with us. Ms. Dresser has some answers as to just why this is so. Join her and OLLI for a thoughtful exploration of the myths and metaphors that keep these legends alive.

This lecture will take place at Lake Park, 1850 Alice Street, Oakland, CA 94612.
