Course Description

With Mt. Diablo as a grand backdrop, Mr. Bailey will take us on a musical journey that explores music inspired by mountains and the outdoors. Dawn, and the morning that follows, has inspired composers from Haydn to Elgar, Ravel, Grieg, and more, to try to capture the beauty of the beginning of the day. Starting in the 1700s, it became popular to perform music written to be played outside, like cassations and serenades, and many recent composers like Messiaen and John Luther Adams have continued to write outdoor works. And when it comes to inspiration of mountains, Richard Strauss’ Alpine Symphony leads the pack, including composers who have even written works inspired by our own Mt. Diablo. Come enjoy the benefits of membership with your fellow OLLI members. Take in the fresh air, the view, and some refreshments all in concert with captivating music as only JKB can do!
(IN PERSON, Outdoors on the Concord Campus)
