Course Description

We will explore contemporary art in California, a state with a most definite state of mind. Mixing European styles with Latin American and Asian influences, California art reflects an engagement with nature,  a commitment to modernity, a sense of creativity, and the wackiness of a state that elects movie actors governors. Artists discussed include Thiebaud, Bechtle, Ruscha, Baldessari, the Mission School, Celmins, Bradford, Liu, Howard, and Aitken. A discussion of what postmodern art is, and a presentation of the work of a number of California postmodernists will be included in our exploration.

Event changed to online only effective October 24, 2021.
