Course Description

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail,” Ralph Waldo Emerson advised.  An extraordinary menage of gifted people who frequented the Concord, Massachusetts area in the mid-19th century took that advice.  The writer Susan Cheever would later call them “The American Bloomsbury”. They shocked their contemporaries with their ideas about education, social reform, group living, the role of women, preservation of the natural environment, and the abolition of slavery.  Dr. Fox will put seven of this remarkable group under the microscope for us in a series of stand-alone lectures that explores their lives, ideas, and writings.  Emerson, Thoreau, two Alcotts (Louisa May and her father Bronson), Fuller, Peabody, and Hawthorne await your close inspection.
