Course Description

Mr. Fagone introduces us to Elizabeth Smith Friedman, a 23-year-old schoolteacher from Indiana who became one of our government’s most effective secret weapons.  Friedman was a master code breaker and puzzle solver who used pencil and paper to catch gangsters during Prohibition and untangle the secret messages of enemies in both world wars. Let OLLI and Mr. Fagone give you a closer look at this little known and unlikely heroine, who outwitted America’s enemies and helped preserve our republic. It’s a fascinating human story and one worth our attention as citizens.
